Members of Alabama’s congressional delegation said Tuesday’s indictment of former President Donald Trump over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election is a “sham” and a case of political retaliation.
“The latest sham indictment of President Trump proves that Biden’s DOJ is determined to try every avenue to punish his political enemies before the 2024 election. After three indictments, it’s beginning to feel like Groundhog Day,” tweeted Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise.”
“Broken justice system!” added Rep. Jerry Carl, R-Mobile, who retweeted a tweet by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.. Scalise accused President Biden of “trying to persecute his leading political opponent” while the Department of Justice “is cutting sweetheart deals for Hunter to cover for the Biden Family’s influence peddling schemes.”

Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, is facing four counts in federal court in Washington: conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights.
The charges stem from Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election.
He is scheduled to make an appearance in Montgomery on Friday for the Alabama Republican Party’s Summer Dinner.
The former president has already been indicted in two other jurisdictions. In March, a Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump in connection with payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence Stormy Daniels, who accused Trump of an extramarital affair.
Trump was also indicted in federal court in Miami in June on allegations he hoarded classified documents and refused government demands to give them back.
Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Hoover, said Tuesday’s indictment “appears to be an even greater stretch of the law in an effort to destroy Donald Trump.”
“Much of this indictment centers on statements made by President Trump on January 6th that create legal problems for the prosecution in regard to free speech,” the congressman continued. “Regardless of any opinions about President Trump or his statements about the outcome of the 2020 election, President Trump’s statements are protected by the First Amendment right to free speech, especially political speech.”
