A well-known GOP politico in Alabama has been charged with the “sexual torture” and murder of a man he knew.
Kyle Hayden Lewter, 36, allegedly killed Derek Franklin Walls, 54, of Harvest, Alabama, last week during a “physical altercation,” according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have released few details about the case, but say the sexual torture charge relates to alleged sexual abuse using an inanimate object.
It’s an eyebrow-raising twist to the tale that has captivated state political circles.
Lewter previously served as campaign chairman for Alabama state Sen. Tom Butler and was also listed as vice-chair of the Madison County Young Republicans, according to WHNT-TV.
Walls was found dead last Thursday in a home at 1790 Capshaw Road, which is about 20 minutes west of Huntsville in the northern part of the state.
A local TV station reported that Walls had been shot in the head, but the sheriff’s office dispelled that report in a social media post.
“The victim and offender knew each other and got into a physical altercation that resulted in the victim being injured,” the offices said.
“It appears he died as a result of those injuries. Detectives are awaiting autopsy results, but again we have confirmed that the victim was not shot.”
Lewter was already being held without bond for the murder charge when he was charged with sexual torture.
Meanwhile, Walls’ daughter, Shelby Thorson, started an online fundraiser to cover his funeral expenses.
“My dad’s life was taken from him in the middle of the night on March 6th,” she wrote. “Due to this unexpected passing, nothing was in place to help with any of the funeral expenses.”
“I would like to have a small service where everyone can get together in remembrance of my father,” she continued. “If anyone would like to donate to help get things together, that would be wonderful.”
It had raised more than $2,300 as of Sunday morning.
Butler, the state senator, said in a Friday statement that he was “speechless” and “saddened for all families involved,” according to WAFF 48.
