Lee County saw a 14.76% voter turnout in Tuesday’s Alabama primary election. 

Voters decided the Republican nominees for some Lee County races.

Nearly 19,000 residents casted a ballot in Tuesday’s primary election out of the 128,741 who were registered to vote, leading to a 14.76% turnout, according to Lee County and the Alabama Secretary of State website.

Voters decided the Republican nominees for the District 3 Lee County Commissioner, Lee County district judge Place 2 and U.S. Representative for Alabama’s Congressional District 3. The race for the District 3 Lee county Commissioner only appeared on ballots for voters in District 3.

While there were no local races on the Democratic primary ballot, Democrat voters selected the party’s nominee for the U.S. president. All voters— regardless of party affiliation— will have the option of voting on the statewide constitutional amendment.

Here’s a breakdown of how Lee County voted in the election: 

Lee County commissioner, District 3

 

Unofficial Results: With all four precincts and absentee ballots in District 3 reported, Jeff Drury had 54.19% of the vote, (1,582 votes), Brian Davis had 29.97% of the vote, (875 votes), and incumbent Gary Long had 15.82% of the vote, (462 votes). This was a Republican primary with no candidates on the Democratic ballot.

Takeaway: This race was only on ballots in District 3 and Drury has won the Republican Primary. He will face no opposition in the November election according to Lee County Probate Judge Bill English.

Lee County District judge, Place 2

Unofficial Results: With 25 precincts and the absentee ballots reported, Samantha Burt Copelan led the way in Lee County with 57.06% of the vote, or (8,346 votes). Clay Thomas had 27.28% of the vote, (3,990 votes), and Harold W. Morris had 15.65% of the vote, (2,290 votes). 

Takeaway: Copelan wins the Republican Primary and will face Kris Patton(Democrat) in the November election.

U.S. representative congressional, District 3

Unofficial Results: With 25 precincts and absentee ballots reported, Mike Rogers led the votes cast in Lee County. Rogers had 78.13% of the vote, (11,351 votes), Bryan K. Newell had 13.84% of the vote, (2,012 votes), and Barron Rae Bevels had 8.01% of the vote, (1,165 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, Rogers is leading with 81.63%, (67,556 votes), of the total votes cast in the primary.

Takeaway: Rogers has the most votes in Lee County, but the district covers several counties. The U.S. representative for congressional district 3 covers Cherokee, Etowah, St. Clair, Calhoun, Cleburne, Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Tallapossa, Chambers and Lee counties.

Chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court

Unofficial Results: On Lee County ballots, Sarah Stewart led with 53.12% of the vote, (7,170 votes), and Bryan Taylor had 46.87%, (6,326 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, Stewart is leading with 61.69% of the vote, 310,846 votes. This was a Republican primary with no candidates on the Democratic ballot.

Takeaway: Stewart led in Lee County and she won the republican nomination to lead the Alabama Supreme Court.

Court of Civil Appeals judge, Place 2

Unofficial Results: On Lee County ballots, Chad Hanson led with 56.45% of the vote, (6,737 votes), and Stephen Davis Parker had 43.54% of the vote, (5,196 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, Hanson has 56.23% of the vote, (245,188 votes). This was a Republican primary with no candidates on the Democratic ballot.

Takeaway: Hanson had the most votes in Lee County, but this is a race covering several counties.

Court of Criminal Appeals judge, Place 2

Unofficial Results: On Lee County ballots, Rich Anderson had 54.18% of the votes with (6,527 votes) and Thomas Govan had 45.81% of the vote, (5,519 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, Anderson has 55.88% of the vote, (243,551 votes). This was a Republican primary with no candidates on the Democratic ballot.

Takeaway: Anderson had the most votes in Lee County, but the race is covering several counties. 

President of Public Service Commission

Unofficial Results: On Lee County ballots, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh has 55.06% of the vote, (7,600 votes), and Robert L. McCollum had 44.93% of the vote with (6,201 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, Cavanaugh has 61.29% of the vote, (306,756 votes). This was a Republican primary with no candidates on the Democratic ballot.

Takeaway: Cavanaugh leads the race in Lee County, but this race is on every Republican ballot in the state.

State amendment

Unofficial Results: According to Lee County ballots, with 25 precincts and absentee ballots reported, 50.02% of voters voted no on the statewide amendment, (8,497 votes), and 49.97% of voters voted yes, (8,490 votes). According to the Alabama Secretary of State website, 51.37% of the vote opposes the amendment, (331,979 votes), 48.63% of the vote supports the amendment, (314,318 votes).

Takeaway: A majority of Lee County voters oppose the amendment, and the amendment was on every ballot in the state. The amendment, listed as statewide amendment number 1 on the ballot, was to amend Section 71.01 of the Constitution of Alabama of 2022 to authorize “the legislature to sign and transmit local laws or constitutional amendments before the transmission of basic appropriations.”

President of the United States(Republican)

Unofficial Results: According to Alabama Votes, Donald Trump led the votes cast in Lee County. Trump has 74.93% (11,609 votes) of the vote, Nikki Haley had 19.51% (3,022 votes) of the vote, Ron DeSantis had 2.25% (349 votes) of the vote, Vivek Ramaswamy had 0.42% (65 votes) of the vote, Chris Christie had 0.34% (53 votes) of the vote, David Stuckenberg had 0.12% (19 votes) of the vote and Ryan Binkley had 0.08% (13 votes) of the vote. 2.34% of the votes, (363), went toward uncommitted. 

Takeaway: Trump won the Alabama Republican Primary. Trump won with 83.28% of the vote, (484,002), according to the Alabama Secretary of State website.

President of the United States (Democrat)

Unofficial Results: According to Alabama Votes, Joe Biden led the votes cast in Lee County. Biden has 90.11% of the vote (3,062 votes), Dean Philips had 4.47% of the vote, (152 votes). 5.41% of the votes, (184 votes), went towards uncommitted. 

Takeaway: Biden won the Alabama Democratic Primary. Biden won with 89.52% of the vote, (163,347 votes), according to the Alabama Secretary of State website.
