🌱Four Mountain Brook Shops Could Be Retailer Of Year + Where To Vote | #elections | #alabama

Hello again, neighbors. It’s Thursday in Mountain Brook and I’m back in your inbox to get you caught up on all the most important things happening locally.

First, today’s weather:

A t-storm around in the p.m.. High: 91 Low: 75.

Here are the top four stories today in Mountain Brook:

  1. Four Mountain Brook businesses — Smith’s Variety, Taco Mama, The Lingerie Shoppe and Tulipano — are competing for the title of Alabama Retailer of the Year. Six other businesses were also nominated but decided not to compete. Smith’s Variety and The Lingerie Shoppe have both been around for many decades, while Taco Mama and Tulipano are relative newcomers in town. (Village Living)
  2. Jennifer Ryan, the founder of the restaurant, Blueroot, shared her “accidental” journey to entrepreneurship at the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce earlier this week. After moving with her husband from California, she decided to open an establishment for “healthy, easy, convenient food that tasted wonderful,” something she couldn’t quite find in the area. Thanks to an award in April 2020 she managed to survive the pandemic and Blueroot is still open today. (Village Living)
  3. There will be six polling locations for the August 23 municipal elections for City Council in Mountain Brook. You can find your location — which may be different from what it was in other elections — by entering an address into this interactive map. (City of Mountain Brook)
  4. Authorities and the community are searching for an 88-year-old man, Earl Sharron Johnson, who has been missing from Vestavia Hills since Tuesday. He was last seen “in the area of Montgomery Highway near Patton Creek Animal Clinic in Hoover.” (AL.com)

Today in Mountain Brook:

  • Clothing swap at O’Neal Library (4 p.m.)
  • Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (8 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • Have you ever wanted to learn more about the old mill that’s become a symbol for Mountain Brook? It was built in 1927 by Robert Jemison Jr. as a replica of an actually functioning mill for locally grown corn from the 1800s. (Alabama Heritage)
  • Mason Music will be holding a festival on Saturday, August 13, to celebrate 10 years of teaching and playing music in the community. (Mountain Brook Chamber via Instagram)
  • Mountain Brook ranked number 7 in a list of the 25 best suburbs in Alabama, based on “cost of living, quality of schools, crime and safety, housing and quality of life offerings,” and other criteria. (AL.com)
  • If you’re already missing the 2022 World Games, set your sights on the 2025 World Police and Fire Games coming up in just three years in The Magic City, featuring “10,000 first responders and 1,600 medal matches.” (WVTM 13)

You’re all caught up for today! I’ll see you soon.
