Subway safety advocates gathered Sunday to release the “Riders Plan for
Public Safety” – a response to Mayor Eric Adams’ plan that was released
earlier this year.
The
Rider’s Alliance group created the plan that they believe caters
to “core issues” New Yorkers face daily while taking the train.
After an uptick during the
pandemic, 10% of NYPD officers now patrol the subway despite it
being less than 2% of the city’s reported crime, according to the report.
One
member of the Riders Alliance says they wanted to take a more proactive
approach rather than a reactive approach.
“There’s
a whole complex of issues that are at play here so we decided to go to our
partners that are experts in housing, in criminal justice reform,
affordability…to come up with a complex policy solutions that could actually
address the core issues that end up creating situations where people may not
feel safe,” says Derrick Holmes digital strategist, for the Rider’s
Alliance.
