Four candidates are running for Arkansas’ vacant Supreme Court chief justice position. The four candidates are Justice Karen Baker, Former State Rep. Jay Martin, Justice Barbara Womack Webb, and Justice Rhonda Wood. The seat will be left vacant after Justice Dan Kemp retires. He told 40/29 News that due to a state law, he would lose retirement benefits through the judicial system if he sought another term. Justice Karen Baker tells us she’s been a justice since 2011 and says her experience is unmatched. Jay Martin is an attorney and former state representative. He says he’s a leader and an outsider who’s ready to be chief justice. Justice Barbara Womack Webb says she’s a longtime Arkansan who’s practiced law for almost 40 years. Justice Rhonda Wood says she’s been a judge for more than 17 years. Wood says she loves Arkansas and is called to serve. You can vote for Supreme Court chief justice on March 5 of next year. The nonpartisan general election is on the same day as the primary elections. The deadline to register to vote in these races is Feb. 5. If Justice Wood, Justice Womack Webb, or Justice Baker are elected, they will be the first female chief justice in the state’s history.
