U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has announced she will not be endorsing a presidential candidate in the 2024 primary.
With the battle lines drawn between former president Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the GOP presidential nominee for 2024 is still up in the air.
In a release obtained by 1819 News, Britt said that her recent appointment to the newly formed GOP Advisory Council was conditional on her remaining neutral in the 2024 primary election.
“There’s no doubt that our nation was stronger, our families were safer, gas and groceries were cheaper, our 401ks were higher, and our future was brighter before President Biden took office,” Britt said. “That’s why it’s critical that we retake the White House in 2024.”
Britt received Trump’s much sought-after endorsement of her Senate campaign in June 2022. Trump was a long-time supporter of her opponent, Mo Brooks. However, Trump rescinded his endorsement of Brooks in March 2022, one month after reportedly meeting with Britt at Mar-a-Lago. Trump claimed Brooks “went woke” by not sufficiently insisting the 2020 presidential election was stolen or rigged.
Although Britt said she will not be supporting a candidate for the GOP primary, she showed a willingness to support the GOP candidate, whoever that may be.
“My focus in the 2024 cycle will be on helping shape a winning message and a winning platform for our GOP nominees across the country, so they win the pivotal General Election after Republican voters make their voices heard in the primary process,” Britt continued. “Additionally, I’ll be hard at work doing everything in my power to ensure our nominees have the resources, teams, and campaign organizations needed to secure victory.”
“We need to restore conservative policies in Congress and to the White House, so that hardworking American families are put first again. And I’m looking forward to supporting the Republican nominees who will help us do that in 2024.”
Britt’s decision runs counter to other Alabama Republicans who Trump endorsed in the 2022 election cycle. Both Trump-endorsed U.S. Reps. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) and Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) endorsed Trump late last year.
