Mayor: New housing options continue to evolve in Williamsport | News, Sports, Jobs

Mayor Derek Slaughter says he feels pretty good about the growing amount of housing options — such as townhouses and luxury apartments — that will soon be available to interested parties in the City of Williamsport.

Slaughter said adding to the quality of the city’s housing stock was on his mind since he was on council for two years before becoming mayor in January 2020.

He described housing development and plans as having “really good momentum,” especially in terms of economic developments, not only in Old City with townhouses to be for sale but across the city landscape.

That includes work begun by the developer T-Ross Brothers and Woodland Heights LLC, which received a recent City Council-approved American Rescue Plan fund investment of about $64,000 toward water and sewer infrastructure for 10 two-unit or 20 townhouses by the high school in the city’s West End.

To that end, a developer has crews that have begun to remove debris from inside and gut and recondition the interior of the former Children’s Discovery Workshop at the old YMCA at the corner of West Fourth and Elmira streets.

“Finally, we were able to get that moving forward,” Slaughter said, of the building that will become luxury apartments.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area developer, through a spokesman, told the Sun-Gazette he wanted to wait until the building was in better shape to hold a media conference and announce more details of the luxury apartments.

“We are getting some housing that is needed for the workforce and a number of new businesses and industries,” Slaughter said.

“They need places to live, so I’m glad we were able to add some new housing options to retain employees and get families that want to work, live and play in the city of Williamsport,” he said.
