BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome spotlights events throughout the community as a part of the Summer of Hope initiative.
Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge has an 8-week program increasing collaboration between community groups to have an impact towards reducing violence. This program is bringing hope and resources to the neighborhoods, streets, and families that have experienced violence.
For the next couple of weeks, Mayor Broome creates opportunities for families and the youth to get active.
- Friday, June 3, 7 PM— EBR Parish Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Boulevard, begins Friday Night Movies on the Plaza showing Disney’s Encanto plus an after-movie dance party
- Saturday, June 4, 9AM-3 PM — Youth who have completed the ninth grade and ages 14-24 looking for summer employment can attend the Mayor’s Youth Workforce Experience (MYWE). This event offers assistance for MYWE applications at the Louisiana Resource Center for Educators, 5550 Florida Blvd.
- Saturday, June 4, 9 AM — Listen in on the ‘Solutions Forum’ as a panel of lawmakers, law enforcement, and community organizers address the violent environment in Baton Rouge at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 185 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive
- Saturday, June 4, 2 PM-7 PM — Project 70805 will be hosting their 6th Annual Capital City Car Show at Bon Carre Business Park. Free for youth under the age of 12. Tickets can be purchased here.
- Sunday, June 5, 4 PM — DJ Sole Lab and Mark Dub will be having the inaugural Sole Lab Sundays Hip Hop and Arts Festival at the Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd., this free event will feature rap cyphers, art show, and live performances by Michael Armstead, The C-Bazz, and more.
- Friday, June 10, 10 AM-4 PM — The Southern University Law Center Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives will be hosting their Expungement Initiative Session.
- Friday, June 10, 6 PM-7:30 PM — Mayor Pro Tempore Lamont Cole and Shoppers Value participate in the 5th annual Pedaling for Peace event. Bikers will ride to Howell Park, rest, and return to Shoppers Value, 5355 Government Street
- Saturday, June 11, 9 AM-2 PM — Community Against Drugs and Violence (CADAV) is having their inaugural Kidz Fest at Scotlandville Parkway at Bradley Road and Veterans Drive. This event will inspire youth in the community. A 1K walk and 2K run will be available at 8:30 AM. This year’s theme is “Kids and Entrepreneurship”
- Saturday, June 11, 12 PM-3 PM — the Baton Rouge Community Street Team (BRCST) are holding their first Healing the Block event at the Leo S. Butler Community Center, 950 East Washington Street, the BRCST is bringing hope, dinners, and community resources to neighborhoods that have experienced violence.
Mayor Broome says, “Having positive outlets and activities supports the healing of our city. Safe Hopeful Healthy BR’s Summer of Hope initiative is not only amplifying various healing modalities and community resources, they are also making direct opportunities for residents to participate and connect. From street engagement to celebratory events urging fellowship among our residents, this summer offers an opportunity for every street, neighborhood, and resident to reclaim the joy and hope we all deserve. This effort works proactively to mitigate and intervene in our most vulnerable neighborhoods impacted by violence.”
