The Des Moines City Council is set to approve plans for a new fire station at their meeting on Monday. Station #4 could soon be torn down and moved if the City Council approves the plans.The first step of the project would be to approve the acquisition of where the new station would be, which comes at a price tag of $500,000.”That allows us to take the very first step in working with property owners for the new station four location between 19th and MLK on Clark. Which we’re excited about because it’s going to improve service to this part of the community,” said Des Moines fire chief John TeKippe.Residents of where the new station would be are happy to hear about this addition to their community, calling it a win for everyone.”I think to have an emergency vehicle close, would be grand,” said Cecelia Welch.Welch says she’s lived in the neighborhood for almost 20 years and has seen numerous incidents where having emergency services nearby would have been beneficial.”We have so many wrecks down there on that corner and they are every other day just about. We had one yesterday, we had two a couple days ago ahead of that one and down on carpenter and 19th,” Welch shared.This new station would be similar to station 11 which was recently renovated.As Des Moines neighborhoods grow and change the fire department hopes this is a way to ensure their safety.”By moving to this location, it allows us to provide a better level of service to one part of town without giving up a level of service anywhere else,” Chief TeKippe said.The new fire station is set to be completed by 2025.
