Council Makes USBWA Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List


FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas guard Ricky Council IV is one of 50 players named to the United State Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list, which is presented to the organization’s national Player of the Year.

Council currently ranks second in the SEC in scoring (18.0 ppg) while leading the league in minutes played (35:20). He additionally ranks second in the SEC in free throws made (79), third in field goals made (112), eighth in field goal percentage (.473), ninth in free throw percentage (.798) and 11th in steals (1.61).

He has led the Razorbacks in scoring seven times and reached double digits in points in 17 of the Razorbacks’ 18 games. On Dec. 5, Council was named the SEC Player of the Week.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the award. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2023 Men’s Final Four in Houston with the formal presentation to follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

All Division I players remain eligible for the 2022-23 Oscar Robertson Trophy. The watch list merely spotlights the top candidates, as selected by the USBWA board.
