SAN ANTONIO (May 12, 2022) — Today, City Council voted to approve an initiative to designate Inclusion Circle in Plaza De Armas at the front steps of City Hall, a project initiated by Councilman Manny Pelaez with a Council Consideration Request filed in December of 2021. Following the vote, the Councilman issued the following statement:

“When City Hall underwent its recent renovations, it was redesigned to put equity and inclusion at the forefront with new ADA accessibility features.

City Hall is the People’s House, a place where neighbors petition, rally, and make their voice heard.

By designating that newly redesigned area in front of City Hall as Inclusion Circle in Plaza De Armas, we are reaffirming our community’s collective commitment to both the spirit and practice of equity and inclusion, all the while maintaining the historical integrity of Plaza De Armas.

“The District 8 office would like to thank the Canary Islands Descendants Association for their invaluable input which helped ensure that this initiative is in line with the existing historical designations at Plaza De Armas. We would also like to thank the following council colleagues Councilwoman Viagran, Councilwoman Rocha Garcia, Councilwoman Cabello-Havrda, and Councilwoman Sandoval for supporting the initial proposal. Lastly, we appreciate Gordon Hartman’s input and advocacy for inclusion, which were integral to this outcome.”
