AUDUBON – The Audubon City Council will be taking the first step towards appointing a new city council member. At the last council meeting Nick Weihs turned in a letter of resignation, saying he would be moving out of the city of Audubon.
Weihs’ term ends in December of 2025.
The council had two choices for replacing him – through a special election or by appointment. An appointed council person would fill the position until the next election, and then would have to win the election to stay on the council.
City Clerk Joe Foran said the council could do a special election, but noted that would end up costing the city a large amount of money in the end. In the past, the council has filled open seats by appointment, and approving an order to advertise for individuals interested in being appointed to the seat is on the agenda for the special meeting.
Mayor Barb Jacobsen said the city might not even need to advertise to find volunteers to choose from. She said she got a call the night of the last meeting, and has received three more since then. “We were happy to learn that people were willing to step up,” to be considered, she said. “We might not even need an ad.”
The council will discuss finding candidates, but would not appoint until the December meeting.
Other new items on the agenda for the meeting include a discussion on the old and new fire stations and changes to the alley behind the new bank.
Jacobsen said that the council would be discussing the new and old fire station, especially what options the city might have for the old station.
The meeting is set for Monday, Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
