With election results still coming in around the country and many voters wondering which political party will take majorities in the U.S. Congress, Alabama GOP chairman John Wahl has already claimed victory in the Yellowhammer State.
“It was a very good night for Republicans in Alabama,” said Wahl. “We won every statewide position, with some records in there, we held a supermajority in the State House and the State Senate, and we picked up well over a dozen seats in local races across an already very red Alabama.”
There were some disappointments for Republicans, however, such as the Jefferson County Sheriff’s race, where incumbent Sheriff Mark Pettway (D) beat challenger Jared Hudson (R). Wahl said Hudson fought a good fight in a blue district.
“Jefferson County is a 42% [Republican] area, and Jared Hudson was able to well overperform that,” Wahl explained. “So I think it was a good night across the board. You never win every race, but we’re so excited for our candidates that won.”

The ALGOP chair said he appreciates the work all candidates put in during the long campaigning process, even if they didn’t win.
On a national level, Wahl said the state of Florida set an example for all Republicans.
“I think where we saw the clearest victory and passion last night was in Florida,” said Wahl. “And Ron DeSantis said it very clear[ly] that Republicans have to be bold. We’ve got to stand for the values that America was founded on and give those values to the people. And I think that’s the recipe for the Republican people going forward. Don’t be ashamed of the platform and the conservative principles that our country was founded on.”
Moving forward, Wahl said the ALGOP still has some work to do, but its purpose will remain the same.
“I think the Alabama Republican Party’s commitment is to stand for the rights and the freedom of the people of Alabama,” Wahl added. “We are the party that believes in standing for individual liberty, fiscal responsibility and for protecting our children … We need to engage the people on the issues that are affecting their everyday lives. Whether that’s inflation or gas prices or their children’s education. And I think that’s going to be the focus on the Republican party for the next three to four years.”
