Mayor looking for ‘Extra Mile’ nominees | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS — Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco is asking the public to nominate local heroes for recognition in a national program.

On Nov. 1, designated as Extra Mile Day, mayors of more than 500 American cities will recognize three individuals or organizations in their local areas that “go the extra mile” in volunteerism and service.

Extra Mile America, the organization coordinating this program, said the purpose of Extra Mile Day is to celebrate the capacity everyone has to create positive change in their families, organizations and communities by “going the extra mile.”

Marco is seeking nominations from Elkins, which can be emailed to him at rwickham@cityofelkinswv.com.

Emails should include the nominee’s name; a nominee can be a person or an organization from the Elkins area.

The emails should include two to four sentences describing why this person/organization should be selected as an extra-mile change maker.

Please submit nominations no later than Oct. 14.

In 2021, Extra Mile winners in Elkins included Chad Ware, Our Town Inc. and Rev. Jeremiah Jasper and Mike Brooks, both from the Woodford Memorial Methodist Church,

Extra Mile America “challenges people and organizations to do more than just wish for change,” according to extramileamerica.org. “By encouraging all of us to live with a ‘go the extra mile’ spirit, we are promoting the possibility of change being created…one positive word, action and attitude at a time. The changes we seek are not created by pointing fingers and shouting at each other, but by ‘going in the extra mile’ in heart, mind and action.”

Shawn Anderson, who created the Extra Mile America concept, is a national keynote speaker and the author of seven books, including “Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose” and “A Better Life: An Inspiring Story About Starting Over.”

An entrepreneur since the age of 10 when he started a business selling worms to fishermen, Shawn has continued by organizing events that make a difference in how people think, according to extramileamerica.org.
